Haas VF-2 Relocation Between Sites

Manchester engineering company · Two CNC machines · Site closure and rebuild relocation

Two machines, one closing site, a tight production window

A Manchester engineering company supplying components into the food and beverage equipment sector was consolidating two sites into a single newly-fitted unit. They had two CNC machines — a Haas VF-2 vertical machining centre and a smaller CNC lathe — that needed to be moved from the closing site to the new facility within a six-week window, with as little production disruption as possible.

The challenge wasn’t just the move itself. The new building had a different floor specification, the services layout was different, and the company needed to be confident that both machines would come back into production at the same accuracy they were leaving in. Two suppliers had already given quotes that didn’t inspire confidence — both light on detail, neither addressing recommissioning properly.

Treating the move as an engineering project, not a haulage job

Ringstones started with a site visit to both locations to confirm what was actually involved. The walk-through identified several things the previous quotes had missed: a low door frame at the new site that meant the VF-2 needed to be partially stripped to clear it, an upgrade required to the compressed air supply at the new building before either machine could be recommissioned, and an opportunity to take the Haas off its existing pads and re-level it on the new floor properly rather than just dropping it back into place.

A written plan covered:

  • Sequence of works for each machine, with downtime windows agreed against the production schedule
  • Pre-move parameter backup, tool data export and machine configuration documentation
  • Specialist rigging contractor specification — including spreader bar requirements and lifting points
  • Services preparation at the new site: power, air, coolant and chip extraction
  • Recommissioning programme: levelling, alignment, services reconnection, parameter restore, run-in and test cuts

The plan went to the client in advance with clear cost expectations and a realistic timeline. No surprises during the work.

Decommission, move, recommission

The lathe moved first, as the smaller and lower-risk machine, allowing the team to confirm services and floor conditions at the new site before the Haas arrived. Decommissioning of both machines followed the same pattern: power down, parameter backup, services disconnection, fluid drainage where required, and preparation for lifting. Vulnerable parts were protected, the spindle was locked on the Haas for transit, and both machines were dispatched on the same haulier visit to keep costs sensible.

At the new site, machines were positioned, levelled, services reconnected, parameters restored, and run-in cycles completed before any production work was attempted. On the Haas, levelling was redone properly on the new floor rather than relying on the old pad positions, and a series of test cuts confirmed accuracy was where it should be.

Both machines in production on time, accuracy verified

The lathe was back in production within four working days of leaving the original site. The Haas, with the additional re-levelling work, was back in production within nine working days. Both machines passed first-piece inspection at the new site without rework, and the client noted that this was the first machine move in several years where the production team didn’t spend the next month chasing accuracy problems.

Outcome summary: Two machines relocated, services and recommissioning handled properly, accuracy verified before sign-off, total cost within the agreed budget. The client engaged Ringstones again the following year for a smaller move and has continued to use us for ongoing service support on both machines since.
